The correct choice highlights that one of the main functions of education, according to Parsons, is to act as a bridge between family and society. Parsons emphasizes the role of education in socializing children into the norms and values of the wider society, transitioning them from the particularistic values of the family to the universalistic values that govern interactions in society. This function is crucial in preparing individuals for their roles within the larger social framework, promoting social cohesion, and ensuring that individuals can successfully integrate into society as they grow older.

While the other options present relevant aspects of education, they do not encapsulate this bridging function as effectively. Competition among students and preparation for employment are certainly roles that education plays, but they aren't the primary focus of Parsons' argument regarding education's social function. Similarly, providing a free service is more about accessibility and equity in education rather than its fundamental sociological purpose.
